Sandro Scandolo
theoretical physicist, ICTP senior research coordinator
He obtained his PhD in physics from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and was Professor of Condensed Matter Physics at SISSA until 2002, as well as a visiting researcher at Princeton University between 2000 and 2002. In 2002, he joined the Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics section at ICTP. His research focuses primarily on the numerical modelling of materials under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature, and he is one of the co-founders of the Quantum-Espresso project for modelling materials from first principles. He is Deputy Secretary-General of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) and Vice-President of the Trieste International Foundation. In 2016, he was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society.
