Marilù Chiofalo holds a PhD from the Scuola Normale and is professor of condensed matter physics at the University of Pisa, where she teaches elementary physics for the life sciences and for physics, many-body quantum states of matter and quantum biology, and Everyday Physics for teacher training. Her research is interdisciplinary, spanning quantum metrology and simulators for condensed matter and fundamental physics, biology and neuroscience, as well as physics education research. She is the author of radio and video formats and of magazines on science and society, and she engages the general public by combining the synthetic languages of art and science. An omnivorous reader and videogame player (for the sake of advancing to the next frame), she learned from volleyball to score in three touches (one of them hers, as setter), from football to score with overhead kicks, and from cycling to fall when necessary. She plays tenor sax in the UNIPI Orchestra, the Filarmonica and the Doctors-clowns band. An activist in women’s movements, she served as deputy mayor of Pisa, contributing to national planning of childhood and gender policies (2008-2018).
