Lucio Rossi
professor of Accelerator Physics University of Milan
Lucio Rossi teaches Accelerator Physics at the University of Milan and is an INFN associate. For nearly twenty years he worked at CERN, where he was responsible for the construction and commissioning of the superconducting magnets for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest particle accelerator, and later proposed and led the High-Luminosity LHC upgrade project, which is currently being installed. His scientific activity has focused primarily on superconducting technologies and large-scale research infrastructures. Alongside his scientific work, he is actively engaged in science communication, with particular attention to the relationship between science and society. In particular, he discusses how major international scientific projects can generate tangible benefits, from medicine (hadron therapy) to sustainable energy (near-zero-loss superconducting cables), and how they can foster collaboration among people and nations from different cultural backgrounds.
