Elisa De Piante is a postdoctoral researcher who studies DNA and its lesser-known forms, going ‘beyond the double helix’ to understand how particular structures within the genetic material can influence the activation of genes involved in diseases. After studying Biotechnology at the Universities of Florence and Parma and completing a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Trieste, she now works at the SloNMR centre in Ljubljana and Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste (within the CERIC-ERIC consortium), where she combines molecular biology, biophysics and advanced structural biology techniques to closely observe the interaction between proteins and DNA/RNA. As the recipient of an AIRC fellowship dedicated to cancer research, she combines her laboratory work with science communication, aiming to explain research in an accessible and engaging way.
