Bruce Bassett è docente di matematica applicata presso la University of Cape Town, ricercatore in astronomia al South African Astronomical Observatory e responsabile del Gruppo di cosmologia e machine learning all’African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. I suoi interessi di ricerca comprendono la cosmologia, la statistica bayesiana, l’apprendimento automatico e la traduzione automatica neurale. Bruce ha ottenuto il dottorato di ricerca alla SISSA di Trieste, seguito da una borsa di studio post-dottorato all’Università di Oxford. Dopo un periodo a Portsmouth e Kyoto, Bruce è tornato a Città del Capo nel 2004. È stato vicepresidente dell’International Astrostatistics Association dal 2011 al 2017 e responsabile della Data Science presso il South African Radio Astronomical Observatory dal 2017 al 2020. Nel 2018 Bruce ha fondato il programma Data Science Intensive (DSI). È autore del libro di divulgazione scientifica Introducing Relativity.

Bruce Bassett is professor of Applied mathematics at the University of Cape Town, research astronomer at South African Astronomical Observatory and head of Cosmology and Machine learning at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. His research interests include cosmology, Bayesian statistics, machine learning and neural machine translation. Bruce did his PhD at SISSA in Italy, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University. After being a period at Portsmouth and Kyoto, Bruce returned to Cape Town in 2004. He was vice-president of the International Astrostatistics Association from 2011-2017 and head of Data science at the South African Radio Astronomical Observatory from 2017-2020. In 2018 Bruce founded the Data Science Intensive (DSI) program which provides African graduates with hands-on training in cutting-edge data science and artificial intelligence techniques for real world applications. He is the author of the popular science book Introducing Relativity.
