Negli ultimi anni una nuova sfida preoccupa sempre più medici e ricercatori di tutto il mondo. Si tratta dei superbatteri, organismi che sono diventati talmente forti da essere in grado di resistere agli antibiotici che abbiamo attualmente a disposizione. Si stima che entro il 2050 potranno arrivare a causare oltre dieci milioni di morti l’anno, superando i numeri dei decessi causati dal cancro. Essere vulnerabili a questi patogeni significa ridurre significativamente anche la possibilità di operare e di poter trattare condizioni mediche apparentemente banali, come un’appendicite. Conseguenze importanti, che meritano di essere discusse anche al di fuori della comunità scientifica, perché un modo per evitare lo scenario peggiore esiste e prevede uno sforzo collettivo.
There is a new challenge that has emerged in recent years and is of growing concern to doctors and researchers all over the world. These are superbacteria, a type of organisms that have become so strong to be able to resist the antibiotics currently available. It is estimated that by 2050 they could be able to cause over ten millions deaths per year, beating the numbers of the deaths caused by cancer. Being vulnerable to these new types of pathogens means that we could no longer be able to operate and to treat seemingly trivial medical conditions, as appendicitis could be. These are important consequences, that deserve a wider discussion outside the scientific community, because the worst case scenario can be avoided only by addressing the problem collectively.
