Professor of theoretical condensed matter physics at SISSA, he works on numerical simulation of matter at the molecular scale, carried out mainly by quantum methods. He was the founder and is still coordinator of the Quantum ESPRESSO project, among the most important quantum matter simulation codes in the world. In the 1990s he was director of CECAM in Lyon. In the early 2000s he founded in Trieste the DEMOCRITOS National Numerical Simulation Center of the INFM, now merged with the CNR; he is one of scientific leaders of the European center of excellence “MAterials at the eXascale” for supercomputing applications and co-leader of the molecular and materials sciences section of the National Center for HPC, Big Data and Quantum Computing under the PNRR. He is founder and co-director of the “Quantum ESPRESSO Foundation” and founding partner of the startup Materys, which provides materials simulation services on the cloud.
