Serena Zacchigna
professor of Molecular biology University of Trieste
Serena Zacchigna is professor of Molecular biology at the Department of Medical Sciences of the University of Trieste, director of the cardiovascular biology laboratory at ICGEB, and scientific coordinator of the centre’s institutional programmes. She graduated in medicine and surgery from the University of Trieste and obtained a PhD in Molecular Genetics from SISSA, before carrying out postdoctoral research at VIB in Leuven, Belgium, with a Marie Curie fellowship. Her research investigates communication between heart and blood vessel cells in cardiovascular development and disease, with the aim of identifying new strategies for cardiac regeneration after myocardial infarction. She also works on the ethical and regulatory aspects of advanced therapies. Author of more than 150 scientific publications, she has received international awards including the ITWIIN Award, the Guido Tarone Award and the Impact Award of the European Vascular Biology Organization.
