Abstract

Ecological instability is directly connected to water governance; the science of hydraulic constructions is the test for tackling the broader debate on the issues of conservation and use of the natural and built environment. Works and intervention plans should not have ideological paternity; militant environmentalism is often loaded with prejudices about the works of man and their engineering. On the other hand, man-led disasters are almost always the product of blind capitalism, unable to see even its own advantage in the protection of the environment. Such preconceived positions, cannot worthily serve any environmental policy. It is necessary to promote new models of protection in which capitalism and environmentalism collaborate in shaping our response as a society to the environmental challenges we are facing.
