Monika Verzár is an archaeologist and historian of ancient art. Born in Switzerland, she studied Classical Archaeology at the Universities of Zurich and Bern and conducted research at the Swiss Institute in Rome. From 1981 to 2015 she taught Greek and Roman Archaeology and Art History at the University of Trieste, where she was a full professor and held numerous academic positions, including Director of the School of Specialization in Archaeology. She has directed archaeological excavations and research projects in Italy and abroad, with a particular focus on Aquileia, Pompeii, Trieste, and the Adriatic region. She served as President of the International Committee of the “Corpus Signorum Imperii Romani” and as Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal “Aquileia Nostra”. Her research interests range from Etruscan studies to Roman archaeology and the archaeology of the western provinces, as well as studies on the reception of antiquity between the eighteenth and the twentieth centuries.
