Every day, we switch on a light, charge a device, or use energy without stopping to consider what makes such a simple gesture possible. Yet behind every switch lies a complex network that is now being called upon to undergo profound transformation in order to support the energy transition. Drawing on the experience of Trieste’s Smart Grid, this event brings together the worlds of public utilities, research and electricity networks to explore how digitalisation, automation and data-processing capabilities are transforming the way energy is distributed and managed in cities. It is an opportunity to reflect on the future of energy infrastructure and on its ability to become more flexible, resilient and intelligent, adapting to increasingly complex patterns of consumption, production and demand. Because the grid of the future will not simply have to transport energy: it will have to learn how to manage its complexity.
