Gianfranco Visentin

head of Automation and Robotics Section ESA-European Space Agency, ESTEC-European Space Research and Technology Centre

Gianfranco Visentin has been with ESA for over 30 years and has led the Automation & Robotics (A&R) Section since 2002. Before joining ESA, he worked as a control engineer on aircraft flight software and active car body control. At ESA, he contributed to major robotics projects including the European Robot Arm (ERA), Columbus microgravity facilities, EUROBOT (which he initiated), and ExoMars. His R&D work spans a wide range of technologies such as rovers, robot arms, walking robots, moles, aerobots, autonomy, teleoperation (e.g., programming stations, exoskeletons), computer vision, and robotic subsystems. He invented several space concepts like 3D digital camcorders (two flown on the ISS), robotic exoskeletons, and net-based space debris capture. He defines ESA’s R&D strategy for robotics and coordinates with EU research. He chairs ASTRA and iSAIRAS and leads the EC’s PERASPERA initiative.
