Luigi Naldini è medico e ricercatore di fama internazionale, professore ordinario presso l’Università Vita-Salute San Raffaele di Milano. Laureato a Torino e dottorato a Roma, ha perfezionato la sua formazione al Salk Institute in California e nel settore biotecnologico negli Stati Uniti. Dal 2008 dirige il San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (SR-Tiget), centro di eccellenza mondiale nella ricerca e nelle sperimentazioni cliniche. È considerato il “padre della terapia genica con vettori lentivirali”, per averne sviluppato le applicazioni sicure ed efficaci. Il suo lavoro ha reso possibili terapie innovative per malattie genetiche rare come leucodistrofia metacromatica, immunodeficienze e beta-talassemia. È membro dell’EMBO ed è stato presidente della European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. Ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti, tra cui il Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine. Lo Stato italiano gli ha conferito il titolo di Grande Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica. Nel 2025 ha ricevuto l’Assobiotec Award e l’ingresso nella Hall of Fame del Premio Ancalau. La sua attività rappresenta un punto di riferimento globale per la ricerca e l’innovazione in terapia genica.

Luigi Naldini is an internationally renowned physician and researcher, and full professor at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan. He graduated in Turin and obtained his doctorate in Rome, before completing his training at the Salk Institute in California and in the biotechnology sector in the United States. Since 2008, he has been director of the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (SR-Tiget), a world-class centre for research and clinical trials. He is considered the “father of lentiviral vector gene therapy” for developing its safe and effective applications. His work has made innovative therapies possible for rare genetic diseases such as metachromatic leukodystrophy, immunodeficiencies and beta-thalassaemia. He is a member of EMBO and was president of the European Society of Gene and Cell Therapy. He has received numerous awards, including the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine. The Italian government has awarded him the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Republic. In 2025, he received the Assobiotec Award and was inducted into the Ancalau Award Hall of Fame. His work is a global benchmark for research and innovation in gene therapy.
